These are the terrific artists that make Cur-ville such a treat. Check them out live and on record whenever possible.

Johnny Harper

  • MUSIC: Brings a funky, soulful style to little-known gems and originals. Deep roots in a broad range of American musical traditions from country to blues to folk to r'n'b. Has appeared on the Cur-ville stage solo, in a duo with Mayne Smith, and as a sideman with practically everyone.
  • RESUME: As solo artist and bandleader with CARNIVAL (and before that, HOT LINKS), Harper has entertained all over Northern California for decades. As guitarist and producer, Harper has worked with luminaries like Maria Muldaur, Barbara Dane, Katie Webster, Michael Doucet, Queen Ida, Ernie K-Doe, Laurie Lewis, David Grisman, Kathy Kallick, and Darol Anger.

Michael McNevin

  • MUSIC: McNevin's songs read like short stories - sometimes familiar, sometimes strange, with a keen eye for Americana in the heart of everyday life. A seasoned voice, unique guitar work, and a vivid brand of storytelling.
  • RESUME: He's been a main stager at the Kerrville, Philadelphia, and Strawberry Music Festivals, is a winner of the Kerrville, Napa Valley, and Columbia River New-Folk Competitions, won the NARAS/NCSA "Unplugged Unsigned" competition, and is a 4-time winner of the NCSA "Song of the Year" award. He's been included in The Performing Songwriter Magazine's "Top-12 DIY's" of the Year, and is a past nominee for "Artist of the Year" by the National Academy of Songwriters. McNevin also has a song and an Etch-a-Sketch drawing in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

Mayne Smith

  • MUSIC: A passionate, soulful singer with a fine voice, and an exciting soloist on dobro and steel. His songwriting reveals deep roots in folk song, bluegrass, and traditional country music, but also at times ranges into other styles from Delta blues and R&B to jazz and Nortena music. Has appeared at Cur-ville in '06 and '07 in a duo with Johnny Harper.
  • RESUME: Two CDs with longtime singing partner Mitch Greenhill. Founding member of the Redwood Canyon Ramblers, the first bluegrass band in northern California. In the early '70s he was a leader (with Greenhill) of the country-rock band Frontier, and in the mid-'80s he founded the eclectic, semi-electric folk ensemble Alternate Roots. His songs have been covered by a variety of artists including Rosalie Sorrels, Jim Ringer, and Linda Ronstadt. Dobro and steel work with a litany of folkie stars including Tom Russell, Jim Kweskin, and Geoff Muldaur.

JL Stiles

  • MUSIC: Draws much of his brilliant guitar technique and raw honesty from the blues and ragtime greats yet creates infectious melodic tunes best described as pop-roots. A charismatic and mesmerizing performer, Stiles' vocal timbre and sparkling finger style guitar set him apart. [From CD Baby]
  • RESUME: A North Bay favorite with frequent appearances at the Mystic Theater, The Sweet Spot, Russian River Brewing Co., and more, Stiles has played with bluesman Guy Davis and has toured in Brazil, Mexico, and Europe.

Kathy Kallick

  • MUSIC: Luminous, passionate vocals, exemplary rhythm guitar playing, and sparkling original compositions: Kallick's music embraces eclectic styles while incorporating classic bluegrass. At Cur-ville, she was backed by a special aggregation called The Messengers, consisting of Johnny Harper on guitar, Mayne Smith on dobro, Markie Sanders on bass, and everybody on vocals.
  • RESUME: Founding member of the internationally-acclaimed band Good Ol’ Persons; Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Bluegrass Association; Grammy Award for her part on True Life Blues: The Songs Of Bill Monroe. Also appearing on Kallick's recordings: Laurie Lewis, Peter Rowan, Scott Nygaard, Nina Gerber, Sally Van Meter, Herb Pedersen, Jody Stecher, and Kate Brislin.

Solid Air

  • MUSIC: Built around the songwriting-singing duo of Allegra Broughton and Sam Page... can breeze through sunny-day acoustic folk; and rock harder as a quartet, deepening the grooves and sharpening the bluesy edges. [Derk Richardson - S.F. Bay Guardian] Appeared at the '07 Dog Days Fest with Johnny Harper.
  • RESUME: Two-time Grammy Award nominee (2005 and 2007); two-time North Bay Bohemian North Bay Music Awards nominee (2006 and 2007); S.F Weekly WAMMIES Awards nominee; Kerrville Folk Festival Songwriter Finalist; performed at the Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival, Sausalito Arts Festival, live on KRSH-FM, appeared with Elvin Bishop; featured song on Nina Gerber CD.

Dale Henry Geist

  • MUSIC: Folk poetry with a rock'n'roll heart in the tradition of Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen. Appeared this year backed by The Rattlers: Randy Odell, Craig Kepler, and Johnny Harper.
  • RESUME: A songwriter from the age of 13, Geist has sustained a modest performing and recording career for over 25 years, playing solo and in outfits such as R'n'B band The Blenders, blues-rockers Snakehips, and party-band The Moils (sic). Early recordings featured collaborators Craig Kepler and Randy Odell; Billy Wilson, James Michael, Bart Davenport, and Jeremy Steinkoler have also appeared on his recordings. He is a disciple of Johnny Harper, who produced his CD and often backs him live and on record.

Rose Harting

  • MUSIC: Rose's voice is like honey mixed with thorns; gritty around the edges but soft and delicate within the melodies, and she has a range that goes from ethereal highs to "lost everything" lows. At Cur-ville, Rose rocked the ukulele and sang like a Prince protege. And, she's a mermaid.
  • RESUME: Sang National Anthem for Golden State Warriors; played Paris clubs in 2007; frequent club gigs in San Francicso and Los Angeles; Diva Mentor at Great Burro Studios' Diva Camp.

L.K. Potts

  • MUSIC: Award-Winning Americana, Country and Contemporary Folk, with a taste of pop.
  • RESUME: Top Finalist position in the '05 Great American Song Contest, Unisong Third Place overall; West Coast Songwriter's Song of the Year; Winner-finalist for the Kerrville NewFolk Showcase, winner-finalist in the 2003 John Lennon Songwriting Contest; Winner, Folk category in the West Coast Songwriter's International Song Contest; NCSA top three singer-songwriters in the Bay Area; featured on the SIBL (Songs Inspired by Literature) compilation CD from the Artists for Literacy Program, sharing soundtracks with the likes of Tom Waits, Steve Earle, Roseanne Cash, Vicki Randle, and David Bowie.

Doug Blumer

  • MUSIC: Resonating, intimate vocals and beautiful guitar playing; harkens to a musical style of bygone days. (Blumer also fronts THE BEERHUNTERS, a good-time, rockin' honky-tonk band.) Blumer guested on McNevin's '06 spot, playing the Fest's unoffical anthem "The Party's At Our House Again".
  • RESUME: Has appeared at the Kerrville Folk Festival; the Strawberry Music Festival; Falcon Ridge Folk Festival; IOTA in Arlington, VA; the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C... Winner of a California Music Award for Best Country/Alt. Country Album.

Bill Staines

  • MUSIC: "Legend" is not too strong a word for Staines, whose songs of simple pleasures and nature's beauty have been heard by millions all over the world. A folksinger through and through. "A craftsman who has cobbled together evocative details, pithy aphorisms and singalong melodies into a trunkful of unassuming, marvelous songs." - The Washington Post
  • RESUME: Guest on A Prairie Home Companion and Mountain Stage; winner of the National Yodeling Championship at the Kerrville Folk Festival; songs recorded by Peter, Paul, & Mary, Nanci Griffith, Mason Williams, The Highwaymen, Glen Yarborough, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Grandpa Jones. Anthologized in numerous songbooks, including several entries in folkie bible Rise Up Singing.
